How to Make Marshmallows That Are So Healthy You Can Eat An Entire Handful

Marshmallows are one of the world’s favorite foods. However, store marshmallows are often packed with plenty of unhealthy ingredients that do the body more harm than good.

Although they are free of fat, they contain plenty of refined sugars, and artificial substances that jeopardize the health.

To be more specific, a cup of mini marshmallows we usually eat for dessert provides 29 grams of sugar. Shockingly the recommended sugar dose is 10 grams. Horrifying!

Health Risks of Refined Sugar

Many studies focused on ‘exposing’ refined sugar, stating it affects the brain performance negatively and causes memory issues.

Also, sugar kills the desire for anything healthy, so it often happens that we forget to eat vegetables, fruits and whole grains and focus on the sugar alone.

Refined sugar can lead to various health problems, among which are:

  • Obesity
  • Heart disease
  • Various cancers, especially pancreatic cancer
  • Insulin resistance and diabetes
  • Food addictions

Healthy Marshmallow Recipe

It is great to hear that marshmallows don’t always have to be a red alert food. Actually, you can prepare them at home and make sure you really use natural and healthy ingredients, that won’t do the body any harm.

Today, we offer a quick and wonderful recipe on homemade marshmallows. Read below for instructions:

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 tbsp. grass-fed gelatin (or agar agar for a vegan option)
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/8 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

Directions:

First, grease a loaf pan well. Set parchment paper with the ends slightly hanging outside of the pan.

Transfer water to a medium bowl and add gelatin. Set aside to soften and blend.

Then, add honey, salt, and ¼ cup of water to the pan and set it on medium heat. Increase temperature to 240 degrees. You will need around 7-8 minutes to do so. Afterwards, turn heat off and set aside.

Next, add the hot syrup into the gelatin mixture by pouring slowly and mixing with a low-speed mixer. Finally, add vanilla and turn mixer on fast speed. Mix from 12 to 15 minutes, until everything thickens well.

Now you need to leave the pan from 4 to 12 hours to dry. Cut in squares and serve immediately.

Coconut Marshmallows: Toast ½ cup of coconut flakes, and place ½ of them on the bottom of the pan.

Cocoa Version: After marshmallows are done, roll them and in cocoa powder.

Enjoy!
